Bread Dipping Olive Oil: 5 Easy Recipes Using Great EVOO

Olive oil being poured over slices of toasted bread

Restaurant-style dipping oil takes two minutes, and the olive oil is the star. Start with a fresh extra virgin olive oil with real flavor, then try these.

Before you start

  • Oil: a robust, fresh EVOO. Its peppery flavor is the point.
  • Bread: crusty sourdough, ciabatta, focaccia, or a baguette, warmed.
  • Bowls: shallow dipping bowls give everyone room to dip.

1. Classic Herb & Garlic

3 tbsp olive oil, 1 small garlic clove (finely grated), ½ tsp dried Italian herbs, pinch of red pepper flakes, pinch of flaky salt, fresh black pepper. Stir and let sit 5 minutes.

2. Balsamic Swirl

3 tbsp olive oil with 1 tsp aged balsamic vinegar dropped into the center. Don't stir. The pools look beautiful.

3. Parmesan & Black Pepper

3 tbsp olive oil, 1 tbsp finely grated Parmesan, lots of cracked black pepper, a few fresh thyme leaves.

4. Za'atar & Lemon

3 tbsp olive oil, 1 tsp za'atar, a little lemon zest, pinch of salt.

5. Just the Oil (Our Favorite)

3 tbsp fresh unfiltered olive oil and a pinch of flaky salt. When the oil is this good, you don't need anything else.

Tips

  • Make it fresh. Garlic gets harsh if it sits too long.
  • Serve at room temperature.
  • Don't store garlic-in-oil mixtures at room temperature. Make only what you'll use that day.
